Development of women’s empowerment drama for the Flow Project
Hi!
It’s such a privilege to be working closely with Dumsani Ngubane for the FLOW project.
It’s one of those partnerships where it just clicks. We operate on the same creative level with furious passion for the power and impact of the arts.
We exchange ideas near daily, not just about the organization but about the people and the stories that matter.
Since taking the organization online making it all official a couple of months ago, the next step is in ideating and building the first solid art project.
We both have 2 daughters and Dumsani has a granddaughter as well, so the focus on women’s empowerment has been a natural extension of our own lives and interests.
As a result, you can imagine the excitement that flushed through me as I received the following message from him the other day:
We didn’t need many exchanges to conclude THIS IS THE ONE.
As soon as the initial startup funding hits his account he will be up and running to start collecting data.
Or… let’s be honest… probably less running and more chilling the African style to form deeper connections and understanding.
It’s one part to research the community and identify who to talk to, which considering the theme may very well be at least half the work. Women in contained and suppressed roles are not likely to give themselves away publicly. It’s about the delicate art of communication and trust building ensuring these women that they’re in a safe space and that their stories will invite the next generation of women (and generations to come!) to slowly break the cycles that kept them small.
This work can’t be rushed but it must begin.
Dumsani will do the essential ground work in the way he knows best. A master of communication and creating safe spaces where you feel seen and heard, I have full trust he will do a terrific job.
My role will be to gather the stories and work my own art of writing… trying to form an overall story arc and script that can be the foundation for the lives out drama play that we want to bring to stage.
We look forward to keep bringing you along the journey!
The work has started and it’s a pure delight to get to share it with you.
Thank you so much for following along the story of the project and its people as it unfolds in real time.
Love,
Elin
